Children’s culture

In Helsinki, the importance and value of quality children’s culture and support for its functioning is recognised. The aim is for every Helsinki resident to have experiences of children’s culture from childhood onwards. One way of achieving this is to map the actors in children’s culture in Helsinki and to gain an insight into the lives of children and young people. The mapping will provide a knowledge base for planning city-wide policies and activities in the field of children’s culture and leisure.

Children’s culture means culture produced for or with children by professionals in the fields of arts or culture, the sharing of existing cultural heritage with children and culture created by children based on play, for example. Culture intended for adults is children’s culture when it is aimed at promoting the cultural rights of children (e.g. an exhibition of works by children for adults or a short film produced by young people for decision-makers).

Involving children’s culture operators

We encourage children’s culture operators to register their services on the Service Map. If the organisation you represent provides children’s culture as described above, you can sign up.
